On a crisp day at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge, I captured what might just be my favorite bald eagle photograph to date. Titled "Blah, Blah, Blah,..." the image showcases two bald eagles perched on the same limb, seemingly engaged in a spirited discussion. Their open beaks and intense gazes create a scene that feels both humorous and profound.
The Technical Details
This memorable shot was taken with my Sony A1 paired with a Sony 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 lens and a 2x teleconverter. The settings—1/1600 sec, f/13, and ISO 6400—allowed me to freeze the moment while maintaining sharpness and depth. Post-processing involved Photo Mechanic Plus, DxO PhotoLab 7, and Photoshop Beta.
Why This Moment Stands Out
Bald eagles are a hallmark species of Loess Bluffs, known for their striking presence and symbolic importance. Bald eagles mate for life and are often observed together during nesting or cooperative hunting. Such behavior can be witnessed more frequently in protected refuges like Loess Bluffs, which provide ample prey and habitat.
The Magic of Loess Bluffs
Loess Bluffs NWR is renowned for its vibrant bird population, particularly during migration seasons. The refuge provides a haven for bald eagles, drawing photographers and bird enthusiasts from across the country. These moments are not only visually stunning but also remind us of the vital role conservation efforts play in preserving such habitats.
As I review the photograph, I’m grateful for the opportunity to witness and document such a compelling scene—a moment that highlights the majesty of America’s national bird and the beauty of the natural world.
